about the artist
Behzad Khalvati is a Toronto based Iranian Canadian musician, composer and song writer. He self taught melodica (melodeon) and composed his first songs for a school music band at the age of 15. Then he started learning music theory and piano at the age of 18. After graduating from pharmacy school with a doctor of pharmacy diploma and receiving another diploma in Homeopathic Medicine at the same time, he became interested in Persian classical and mystic music and took lessons on Daf; a Persian handheld drum which has a long history and has been played in Sufism music.
After immigrating to Canada, he formed “The Mystic Melodies of Persia” band and they have been playing Persian classical music of Persian Masters in multicultural gatherings in Ontario and the United States. The songs are based on poems from two Persian mystic poets; Rumi and Hafiz. Those performances were a valuable experience for Behzad in rearranging the existing songs for the band.
At the age of 40, while living in Toronto area with his family and working as a pharmacist, after a series of dreams and inspirations, he started learning Barbat, a Persian string instrument (oud or Lauta) with thousands of years of history, under Maestro Mr Hossein Behroozinia.
At the age of 44 he realized he is able to compose some fresh and interesting melodies. He took those inspirations seriously and started learning music compositions, orchestration and preparing music notations for multi instrumental music under the well accomplished Persian pianist and composer Mr Reza Rohani.
After years of working on this project, his first instrumental album “The Eternal Love” was released on Oct 4 th 2026 at the album release concert at City Playhouse Theater in Vaughan.
